WordPress.com Overview

WordPress.com is the official managed WordPress hosting platform run by Automattic — the company founded by WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg. Launched in 2005, the platform now powers millions of websites worldwide and operates as the easiest way to get a real WordPress site online without managing your own hosting, security patches, or backups. WordPress.com handles the infrastructure (servers, CDN, security, daily backups, automatic WordPress core updates) while you focus on content, design, and growth.

The 2026 pricing structure spans five plans — Free, Personal ($9/mo), Premium ($18/mo), Business ($40/mo), and Commerce ($70/mo) — with all paid annual plans now including plugin support, custom themes, and a free first-year domain. Business and Commerce tiers add the full WordPress plugin ecosystem (65,000+ plugins), SFTP/database access, and full WooCommerce integration on Commerce. With managed hosting, automatic backups, free SSL, global CDN, and 24/7 expert support included even on lower paid tiers, WordPress.com is one of the most-recommended managed WordPress hosts in 2026.

Run a small consultancy site on the Business plan and have zero hosting headaches — daily backups, free SSL, fast CDN, and 24/7 chat support that actually solves problems on the first ticket. The plugin support change in 2024 was the missing piece. WordPress.com is now a no-brainer pick for non-technical founders.

Started on the Free plan to test, then upgraded to Personal for the custom domain — total spend in year one was about $30 including the domain renewal. Easy to use, reliable hosting, and the included WordPress training is excellent. Will likely move to Premium when I outgrow the Personal plan limits.

Built three client sites on WordPress.com Business and have been impressed with the uptime, speed, and 24/7 support. Migration from self-hosted was much smoother than expected. Higher tier pricing is a bit steep vs DIY but worth it when clients are non-technical and need everything just to work.

WordPress.com Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions buyers ask before signing up to WordPress.com in 2026.

What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?+

WordPress.com is a managed hosting service that runs WordPress for you (run by Automattic). WordPress.org is the free open-source software you can self-host on any web host. WordPress.com is easier; WordPress.org gives you more control and is usually cheaper for technical users.

Can I install plugins on WordPress.com?+

Yes — as of 2024-2025, all paid plans (Personal, Premium, Business, Commerce) include plugin support. Business and Commerce plans give you the full WordPress plugin ecosystem (65,000+ plugins). The free plan does not support custom plugins.

Is the WordPress.com free plan really free?+

Yes. The free plan is permanently free with a wordpress.com subdomain (yoursite.wordpress.com), basic themes, and ad-supported display. Upgrade any time to remove ads, get a custom domain, and unlock plugins.

Does WordPress.com include a custom domain?+

Yes — all annual paid plans (Personal, Premium, Business, Commerce, Enterprise) include a free custom domain for the first year. After year one, standard domain renewal fees apply (typically $10–$30/year depending on the extension).

Can I migrate my existing WordPress site to WordPress.com?+

Yes. WordPress.com supports easy migration from self-hosted WordPress sites — content, themes, plugins, and users transfer through their import tool or the Jetpack migration plugin. Business and Commerce plans support full custom theme and plugin migration.
